Puff the Magic Dragon -- Peter, Paul & Mary

PUFF --THE MAGIC DRAGON
Leonard Lipton & Peter Yarrow

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
in a land called Honah Lee

Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
and brought him strings and sealing wax
and other fancy stuff

Together they would travel
on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout
perched on Puff's gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes
would bow whene'er they came
Pirate ships would lower their flag
when Puff roared out his name

A dragon lives forever
but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings
make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened,
Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon
he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow
green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play
along the cherry lane
Without his life-long friend
Puff could not be brave
So Puff that mighty dragon
sadly slipped into his cave

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring

Jesu, joy of man's desiring,
Holy wisdom, love most bright;
Drawn by Thee, our souls aspiring
Soar to uncreated light.
Word of God, our flesh that fashioned,
With the fire of life impassioned,
Striving still to truth unknown,
Soaring, dying round Thy throne.

Wachet auf, Ruft Uns Die Stimme

我请大家听的是第四乐章,合唱Zion hört die Wächter singen(Zion hears the watchmen singing)锡安(耶路撒冷)已闻守望歌声。

Franz Lehár - Vilja Lied

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf sings "Vilja" from The Merry Widow (Lehár) (excerpt)

There once was a vilja, a witch of the wood,
A hunter beheld her alone as she stood,
The spell of her beauty upon him was laid,
He look’d and he longed for the magical maid!
For a sudden tremor ran,
Right thro’ the love bewilder’d man,
And he sigh’d as a hapless lover can.

Vilja, O Vilja! The witch of the wood!
Would I not die for you, dear, if I could?
Vilja, O Vilja, my love and my bride!
Softly and sadly he sigh’d

Vilja, O Vilja! The witch of the wood!
Would I not die for you, dear, if I could?
Vilja, O Vilja, my love and my bride!
Softly and sadly he sigh’d

The wood maiden smiled, and no answer she gave,
But beckon’d him into the shade of the cave;
He never had known such rapturous bliss,
No maiden of mortals so sweetly can kiss!
As before her feet he lay,
She vanish’d in the wood away,
And he call’d vainly till his dying day!

some say love,it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
some say love,it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed.
some say love,it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower,
and you it's only seed
it's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
it's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance
it's the one who won't be taken,
who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dying
that never learns to live。
when the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long.
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong,
just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snow
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring, becomes the rose

The Time Traveler's Wife,还且等了一段时间呢。

曾经有段时间,据说Charles河也是污染严重,有首歌唱的是“I love that dirty water, oh, Boston”,我想某天也许我会唱“I love that dirty air, oh, Beijing”。

(Spoken:)
I'm gonna tell you a story
I'm gonna tell you about my town
I'm gonna tell you a big bad story, baby
Aww, it's all about my town

Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the river Charles (aw, that's what's happenin' baby)
That's where you'll find me
Along with lovers, fuggers, and thieves (aw, but they're cool people)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, you're the Number One place)
Frustrated women (I mean they're frustrated)
Have to be in by twelve o'clock (oh, that's a shame)
But I'm wishin' and a-hopin, oh
That just once those doors weren't locked (I like to save time for
my baby to walk around)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Because I love that dirty water
Oh, oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Well, I love that dirty water (I love it, baby)
I love that dirty water (I love Baw-stun)
I love that dirty water (Have you heard about the Strangler?)
I love that dirty water (I'm the man, I'm the man)
I love that dirty water (Owww!)
I love that dirty water (Come on, come on)

Perhaps Love -- Placido Domingo & John Denver

Perhaps Love
Artists : Placido Domingo , John Denver

Perhaps love is like a resting place
A shelter from the storm
It exists to give you comfort
It is there to keep you warm
And in those times of trouble
When you are most alone
The memory of love will bring you home

Perhaps love is like a window
Perhaps an open door
It invites you to come closer
It wants to show you more
And even if you lose yourself
and don't know what to do
The memory of love will see you through

O love to some is like a cloud
To some as strong as steel
For some a way of living
For some a way to feel
And some say love is holding on
And some say letting go
And some say love is everything
Some say they don't know

Perhaps love is like the ocean
Full of conflict full of pain
Like a fire when it's cold outside
A thunder when it rains
If I should live forever
And all my dreams come true
My memories of love will be of you

And some say love is holding on
And some say letting go
And some say love is everything
Some say they don't know

Perhaps love is like the ocean
Full of conflict full of pain
Like a fire when it's cold outside
A thunder when it rains
If I should live forever
And all my dreams come true
My memories of love will be of you

Melodramma – Andrea Bocelli

Paolo Luciani; Pierpaolo Guerrini

Melodramma

Questa mia canzone
Inno dell’amore
Te la canto adesso
Con il mio dolor
Così forte, così grande
che mi trafigge il cuor.

Ma limpido è il mattino
tra i campi odor di vino
Io ti sognavo e adesso
Ti vedo ancora lì
Ah, quanta nostalgia
Affresco di collina
Io pìango che pazzia
Fu andarsene poi via.

Questa melodia
Inno dell’amore
Te la canto e sento
Tutto il mio dolor
Così forte, così grande
che mi trafigge il cuor.

Ma limpido è il mattino
tra i campi un gran mulino
lì è nato il mio destino
amaro senza te…
amaro senza te.

E questo core canta
Un dolce melodramma
È l’inno dell’amor
Che canterò per te
È un melodramma che
Che canto senza te.

Melodrama

This song of mine
Hymn of love
I sing to you now
With my pain
So strong, so great
it stabs my heart.

But the morning is clear
between the fields the scent of wine
I dreamed of you and now
I see you still there
Ah, what memories
Fresco of hills
I cry what madness
Was to leave and go.

This melody
Hymn of love
I sing to you and feel
All my pain
So strong, so great
it stabs my heart.

But the morning is clear
between the fields a windmill
there was born my fate
Bitter without you ...
Bitter without you.

And this heart sings
A sweet melodrama
It is the hymn of love
I'll sing for you
It is a melodrama
I sing without you.

Mi Mancherai (我想念你)- Josh Groban

Mi Mancherai

Mi mancherai se te ne vai
Mi mancherà la tua serenità
Le tue parole come canzoni al vento
E l'amore che ora porti via

Mi mancherai se te ne vai
Ora per sempre non so come vivere
E l'allegria, amica mia, va via con te

Mi mancherai, mi mancherai, perchè vai via
Perchè l'amore in te si è spento
Perchè, perchè...
Non cambierà niente lo so
E dentro sento te

Mi mancherai, mi mancherai, perchè vai via
Perchè l'amore in te si è spento
Perchè, perchè...
Non cambierà niente lo so
E dentro sento te

Mi mancherà l'immensità
Dei nostri giorni e notti insieme noi
I tuoi sorrisi quando si fa buio
La tua ingenuità da bambina, tu...

Mi mancherai amore mio
Mi guardo e trovo un vuoto dentro me
E l'allegria, amica mia, va via con te

English Translation

I Miss You

I'll miss you if you go
I will miss your serenity
Your words like songs in the wind
And love that now take away

I'll miss you if you go
Now I do not know how to live forever
And joy, my friend, goes away with you

I miss you I miss you, why go away
Why the love in you is dead
Because ...
I know nothing will change
And inside I feel you

I miss you I miss you, why go away
Why the love in you is dead
Because ...
I know nothing will change
And inside I feel you

I'll miss the immensity
Of our days and nights with us
Your smiles when it is dark
Your naivete as a child, you ...

I miss you my love
I look and I find emptiness inside of me
And joy, my friend, goes away with you

Harbingers of Spring and Other Random Thoughts

It was the vernal equinox yesterday, when day and night are of the same length. We have had five beautiful days in a row. I was really excited to see that the tulips I planted last October have made their way out of the ground. I can’t wait to see the blossoms of pink and yellow in a few weeks.

In searching for early signs of Spring, I stopped by Mt. Auburn Cemetery. I seem to know exactly where to find those crocuses, daffodils, and the blue or white flowers that I don’t know the names.

Spring is just around the corner. Isn’t that exciting?

Also yesterday, I read a blog post which mentioned Raymond Carver’s What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. I remember clearly that was the only book that our ESL teacher Mr. King made us buy when we took his class. I don’t recall the details of those short stories any more, but I remember that this was a book that I really liked. I lost the book, however, because I lent it to a French labmate, Ann, and she moved back to France. So now I can’t just go to my bookshelf and pick it up and start reading. But I do remember one scene, where an old couple was being treated at a hospital after a severe car accident. The old man couldn’t turn his head to see his wife, and that was killing him. I remember being so moved reading that, and I thought that was definitely love. I found that paragraph online, so I copy it here. You’ll see how abusive the language is, but the emotion is there, raw and fresh:

""I mean, the accident was one thing, but it wasn't everything. I'd get up to his mouth-hole, you know, and he'd say no, it wasn't the accident exactly but it was because he couldn't see her through the eye-holes. He said that that was making him feel so bad. Can you imagine? I'm telling you, the man's heart was breaking because he couldn't turn his goddamn head and see his goddamn wife." Mel looked around the table and shook his head at what he was going to say. "I mean, it was killing the old fart just because he couldn't look at the fucking woman.""

But really, what we talk about when we talk about love? Do we really know love?

Some of my friends didn’t like to go to Mr. King’s class, thinking it was boring and useless. I didn’t agree. I thought it helped me to learn colloquial American English. Mr. King also used pop songs to teach us English. I remember he asked us, which singer’s song do you listen to? I said, Right Here Waiting by Richard Marx. Mr. King was like, who? Hmm, I saw then that what was popular in China wasn’t necessarily popular in the US. One song Mr. King played for us was Take It Easy by The Eagles. I was totally impressed by the lyrics “I’ve got SEVEN women on my mind”. Wow, what a busy man!

well, i've been running down the road
tryin' to loosen my load
i've got seven women on my mind:
four that wanna' own me
two that wanna' stone me
and one says she's a friend of mine
take it easy....
take it easy....
don't let the sound of your own wheels
drive you crazy
lighten up while you still can
don't even try to understand
just find a place to make your stand
and take it easy....

well, i was standin' on a corner
in winslow, arizona
such a fine sight to see....
it's a girl, my lord, in a flatbed ford
slowin' down to take a look at me
come on, baby...
don't say maybe...
i gotta' know if your sweet love
it's gonna' save me
we may lose and we may win
but we'll never be here again
so, open up by climbin' in
so take it easy....

well, i've been running down the road
tryin' to loosen my load
got a world of trouble on my mind
lookin' for a lover, who won't blow my cover.
she's so hard to find

oh, we've got it easy
we ought to take it easy.

I seem to reminisce a lot recently. A friend asked, “Isn’t it a bit too early for us to do that right now?” I said, no, it’s never too early. We will only forget more. So I will record, whenever I feel like, things I lost and gained in my past.

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's clouds illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Between the Minds – Jack Savoretti

I've never been the one to shout because I listen
I don't like to raise my voice
Maybe I should learn to lose my inhibitions
and let my feelings make some noise
You don't know what I'm going through
When silence is all I give to you

So hear me, if you're out there
Take these words and try to understand
That I want you, and I need you, to take the hand of a quiet man

I love the way you hear the words unspoken
It's like you read between the minds
You know before the silence has been broken
Well, at least most of the time
But I don't know what you're going through
It must be something I didn't say to you

So hear me, if you're out there
Take these words and try to understand
That I want you, and I need you, to take the hand of a quiet man
Of a quiet man

So hear me, if you're out there
Take these words and try to understand
That I want you, and I need you, to take the hand of a quiet man
Of a quiet man
Of a quiet man
Of a quiet man

Glinka, Nocturne in F minor "La Séparation"

Beautiful yet melancholy, I like both performances so I post both here.

Solitude

第一本书读的是“Kafka on the Shore”。

The Brothers Four - Seven Daffodils

I do not have a mansion, and I haven't any land,
Not even one dollar to crinkle in my hand.
But I can show you morning on a thousand hills,
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

I do not have a fortune to buy you pretty things,
But I can weave you moonbeams for necklaces and rings,
And I can show you morning on a thousand hills,
And kiss you and give you seven daffodils.

Oh, seven golden daffodils, all shining in the sun,
To light our way to evening when our day is done.
And I will give you music, and a crust of bread,
A pillow of piney boughs to rest your head.

她很迷 Andrew Lloyd Webber 的 Phantom of the Opera,去伦敦的时候专门跑去看。 All I Ask of You,也是从胖那里借来的,也是出自这个剧,年少的我感动连连,‘爱我,是我对你唯一所求’,呵呵。

Figlio Perduto / Sarah Brightman

Lost son

Walls of wind
Night has fallen
Father and son are together

With a horse
They proceed
Through this intense darkness

But suddenly
The boy trembles
With fear
It gets cold

Father oh father
Haven't you seen
The king of the elfs
There he is

Lost son
Do you want to play?
I bring you joy
Come with me

Father oh father
Did you hear
What he said
And what he will do?

Lost son
If you don't come with me
I will use the power that I have

Father oh father
The king of the elfs
Is touching me
He hurts me

And the boy
Eyes closed
He doesn't move
He's already lost

Son
Lost son
If you don't come with me
I will use my power

Father oh father
The king of the elfs
Is touching me
He hurts me

And the boy
Eyes closed
He doesn't move
He's already lost

...he's already lost

Beethoven, Symphony No 7, II - Karajan, Berliner Philharmoniker

——————————————————————————————————————————————
updated Jan. 10, 2010, answering Troubadour's comment:
