Really an easy read: two and a half pages long, with two figures. The first panel (of two) in figure one is previously published. Apart from the short length of the paper, what impressed me most is this:
Original manuscript submitted: 12/20/06
Manuscript accepted: 12/26/06
Mind you, there was a major holiday in between.
这,才叫牛!

Crystallographer No More :(
Today I disappointed myself (don't I do that everyday?). Our newcomer T came to me for help with his crystallography homework assignment after hearing that I was a crystallographer. I completely forgot how diffraction patterns are related to crystal lattices, or space groups, or how many asymmetric units there are in any unit cell of a space group. Suddenly I felt so inadequate as a PhD. After many years of training, and many years of not using the knowledge, I am no longer a crystallographer! It is embarrassing, and I feel really sorry to Profs. T, N, R, and P. So I brush up my geeky crystallography knowledge (with the help from wiki), and hopefully tomorrow I will be able to help T.
BTW, T's homework has a really pretty diffraction pattern: a tetragonal crystal's h0l, more regular and impressive-looking than this one.

Aftermath of Nasty Storm
H's car resting (i.e. stuck) on an icy snow bank
rear tires are inches (a foot, H's word) above ground
Photo credit: H and H's Mom
Meanwhile last night I spent an whole hour digging tracks (only tracks, yes) in thick-ice-covered heavily-packed deep-frozen snow for my car to park off street.
Oh how I miss the fluffy light snow! How I hate snow banks!

本周逸事
Monday:
While introducing us to the new comer T, my boss, who is famous for his name-phobia, called me W. When I realized he was addressing me (after some 20 seconds), I was almost ready to correct my name. But seeing that there was no sign that he realized he made a mistake, I let it go by. What's the big deal, I will tell T what my real name is later.
Tuesday:
At our beer happy hour, T, who happened to sit next to me, told me that he knew all along that my real name is Allegro. He said, "when the boss called you W, I knew he was wrong. I knew for sure there were no two Ws in this lab." Oh, smart boy. He's already won some good points from me!
Wednesday:
This ruler, owner unknown, with the writing in black, mysteriously appeared on my bench overnight. After we (M and me) deciphered what the writing was, I came up with a theory inspired by a hot topic from last night. M wrote more in blue, and returned the ruler to J's desk. When J saw it, he found it very amusing, but said nothing. One thing for sure: this ruler belongs to him.
Notice: this ruler is missing the first 7/8 inch or so.
Thursday:
I realized that I was trapped in the dark room when J, who was trying to exit the rotating door, got stuck in the middle of the turn. He tried in vain to release himself.
This was the perfect time when Allegro came to the rescue!
Well, I didn't have any luck at the beginning either. Panic stricken, I went through many possible ways for freeing both of us, including the ultimate taking-out-the-whole-door method. This lasted for about 30 seconds, until a final gentle push on the right or the left freed the circular door in its rotating groove.
Freedom tasted so sweet afterwards. For I can never see myself trapped in a dark place for longer than 5 minutes.
What's going to happen tomorrow?

Johnson Space Center
Oh my, don't we all like to gossip! I guess the astronaut love triangle / attempted murder is hot news today. Apparently love drives one crazy, even astronauts can't be spared.
I visited the Johnson Space Center (JSC) on the last day of 2006. I am posting some pictures in case you haven't been there yourself. As you might know, JSC serves as the mission control center for all the space shuttle flights and much more. Remember the famous "Houston, we've got a problem"?
No shuttle was in space that day, plus it was a Sunday, so the control room was empty. But you still can see on the screens where the International Space Station (ISS) was currently orbiting the earth, and live video feeds from the ISS.

Why did I become suspicious about the Moon project after I saw the exhibition?
Maybe I should spend more time reading about it.
